Thelwall Ferry On Manchester Ship Canal
Since January 1894, the Thelwall Ferry became a free public right of way, and still is to this day! The initial ferry was just one man and a rowing boat, but today it moves along by propeller. Back when the traffic was made up of horse drawn carriages and most of Warrington was countryside, the canal ride used to cost One Penny, hence the name 'Thelwall's Penny Ferry'.

Thelwall Ferry Service Background
Farm tracks, roads, and an extensive network of footpaths, stretching 36 miles long, were cut off by the Manchester Ship Canal. In the past, this canal transported cattle, horses, and carts across its expanse, using a unique floating raft and pulley system known as the “pontoon”. This was because they could not be transported across with a small wooden boat.
Today, our highly knowledgeable Ferry Men, Colin and Mark, expertly manages the ferry service, providing seamless transportation for passengers across the Manchester Ship Canal. This ferry, previously known as the Thelwall's Penny Ferry, once operated from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm. However, you can still enjoy a ride during dedicated hours: two hours in the morning, two in the afternoon, and two in the evening. It's a remarkable blend of history and modern convenience, ensuring that this iconic waterway endures. Get in touch with us for more information.
